Slieverue Post Office
which was part of the old Hartley residence was adjacent to the
school on one side. This post office which was run by the Aylward and Hartley
families since the beginning of the century closed forever on the 15th January
1993. The original building was later demolished to make way for a new house.
Murphys
shop was also adjacent to the school on the other side. The shop was owned
and operated by 2 sisters, Nanny and Mary Murphy and their sister-in-law Mary.
Their brother Dick was also the local postman. Pupils from the school were
free to go to the shop at lunchtime to buy sweets and sometimes their lunch.
Sadly the shop closed in 1980. Like the post office, the original building
was demolished to make way for a new house.
The
main N25 road went through Slieverue Village until 1986. Up until then, all
the traffic went right by the school gate. Thankfully, the by-pass was opened
in 1986 taking the main bulk of the traffic behind the school.
